Manila Gum Elemi
ORIGIN & IDENTITY
The word “elemi” is believed to come from the Arabic phrase “Al-lami,” referring to a group of oleoresins obtained from plants of the Burseraceae family. Manila Gum Elemi is one of the best-known varieties and is derived from Canarium luzonicum.
PHILIPPINE SOURCE
Canarium luzonicum is locally known as the pili tree. The Philippine archipelago is its natural habitat, and as an endemic species, it is found only in the Philippines. This gives Manila Gum Elemi its true Philippine botanical origin.
AROMA & NATURAL FORM
Manila Gum Elemi is also known locally as “sahing” and historically referred to in Spanish as “brea blanca” or white pitch. It is a pale white to yellow aromatic resin with honey-like viscosity and fresh lemon and pine-like notes. It is commonly supplied in resin blocks and may also be steam-distilled to produce aromatic essential oil.
